2017 - is this real life?

Another year down, another look back at what it was.

Let's take a quick look at the good,

The bad,

And the downright confusing.

The Good:

Our family +1 road trip to Colorado. Road trip! Snore through Iowa and Nebraska. Dodge the tumbleweed in eastern CO. Visit family who we haven't seen in what seems like forever. See the mountains. Climb the mountains. See mule deer and elk and moose. Visit Voodoo Donuts. Experience their museums. Partake in legal recreation. Tour The Stanley. CHECK! The only thing we weren't able to do was visit one of my best friends. Next time!

March for Science Chicago. When the going gets tough, the tough make a sign out of poster board and carry it down the streets of Chicago with 60,000 other people holding signs of their own. All those people and not a single incident of badness. Take that, Chicago badmouthers! You can read more about the day on an earlier blog post.

Taping The Daily Show: Chicago. Speaking of Chicago, when you just happen to notice that free tickets are available for The Daily Show that's only taping 2 hours away from where you live, and you visit that site and tickets are still actually available...you get the damn tickets. It was a truly unique experience. It was fun to laugh and boo and want to throw things at the screen with others who feel the same way we do about many things. And it was also inspiring to see and meet people who are trying to do some good in the world - from neighborhood do-gooders to celebrities. You can see us (sitting amongst the people with business connections whose area we infiltrated) in row 5 in the clip below:

Swear Trek on Twitter. Okay, this one came out of left field, didn't it? With everything going on in the world in the past year, nothing quite expressed exactly what was going on in my mind the way this account did. I'm not even that big of a Trek fan, but this feed just gets me. If you have the twitter (or even tumblr), and don't mind a whole hell of a lot of curse words, check them out @swear_trek

Aaron Rodgers liked my Instagram comment. Okay, it's not really one of the best things that happened this year, but I just thought I'd throw in there.

The Bad:

Government. I guess I can just leave it at that, huh? I can't think of one single good thing that happened politically. I mean, I'm sure there had to be something, but there was just so much bad and so many insane people getting so much airtime. I had to take breaks from the news just to regain my sanity...and keep from becoming an alcoholic.

Real world companies not reacting the way other well-known industries did to harassment issues. I'm not going to say too much here, but it's terribly disappointing to do the right thing and put yourself out there when the powers that be don't do what they can to make things right. Some places are still stuck in the 1960's and just don't get it. Where'd that wine go?

Getting older. I don't think I need to say any more than that. Granted, I'm still thankful to be here, I just wish my body acted the way it did 20 years ago. Where's the magic pill for that shit?

The Confusing:

Twin Peaks: The Return. The first time I watched it, I was completely lost and disappointed that it didn't go the way I wanted it to, though I still enjoyed it. The second time I watched it, I was still completely lost, but had no expectations to be disappointed by. Even after reading the book that helped fill in the blanks between series and gave a little more insight in storylines, I still have so many questions. So. Many. Questions.

And that sums it up. Quickly. I'm gonna go crawl into a cave for the next 36 hours or so and come out on the other side of the holiday. I have a few things I'm greatly looking forward to in the coming year. I'm not going to give anything away though. You'll have to keep an eye on my Facebook page or Twitter account or something to see what's going on.

I wish you all time spent with the best of friends, love, laughter, and all good things.

friday dance party

There are some Fridays where you just have to turn on the disco station on Pandora and shake your booty along with the music.  Join me, won't you?

time-sucking vacuum

So, a day or two ago I decided to join Pinterest because REASONS.

I have no idea.  I think it's just another means for me to gawk at men.  (I blame you, Stan.)

Anyhoo...the boards are much like the things that I post on here, so if you're on, you can find me here: http://pinterest.com/goddessr

I did find one thing that represents me well, I think.  I had to share...

Words to live by.

Except for the whole Steve Trevor thing.  Seriously.  Stop doing everything for one stupid guy who keeps getting himself kidnapped.

no, i'm not on the face book

Today is my first full day off of Facebook - I deactivated my account yesterday evening.  Jaws dropped across the land when I warned them of my impending departure.  You see, I was always on Facebook.  No matter where I was, work, home, car, and it was sucking the life out of me!  Even if I wasn't posting anything, it was on somewhere in the background, frequently refreshed, so I wouldn't miss a minute of what was going on.

And what was going on anyway?

Not a whole lot.

Most of the people who I really wanted to see updates on fell into two categories: They rarely ever posted or they also posted things via Twitter, Instagram and/or blogs.  And yet I kept hitting refresh.  I'd keep getting frustrated by the things I was seeing from other people- the memes, the reposting without researching, the constant outrage, the incessant need for attention.  And I'd keep refreshing.   I'd go for periods of days without posting anything, but I just. kept. refreshing.

A few months ago, I came to the realization that this wasn't a productive way to spend my time (ya think?) and knew that I wanted to let it go completely, but I couldn't just yet.  I was in the midst of planning a class reunion and that was our main means of communication, so instead of leaving completely, I drastically reduced the number of people on my friends list by about half, only keeping my classmates, close family, and the few closer friends I wanted to try to keep in touch with.  The purge gave me a great feeling.  I wasn't done yet, but at least it was a start.

Once the reunion was over a couple of weeks ago, I was ready to leave completely.  Any responsibilities I had on there, I was sure to give to other completely competent people.  Any pages I was watching on Facebook for news or information I found on Twitter and started following them there instead.  Those friends who fell into the "also posting on Twitter/Instagram/blog" category, I made sure to follow on those other sites.  I started a new blog which I'd actually give my family the link to (as opposed to this one) to keep them up to date on pictures of events and non-events.  I put all of my contact information on my page for a few days so that people would have the time to jot it all down or add me to their bookmarks before anything I posted disappeared.

Last night, when I was sure I had done all I could, I deactivated my account.  This is no simple task.  You have to go through three different security measures and on top of it all, they throw up a page with 5 random friends on it saying how much they are going to miss you when you're gone.  Of the people they listed, I might agree with one, but seriously?  They play the guilt card?  I finally made it through the gauntlet of "are you sure"s and was free.

I'm hoping to stay off forever.  My husband and close friends laugh at me - they're pretty sure I can't do it.
My friend sent this to me.  I thanked him for his vote of confidence.
Barring any type of emergency where I need to get in touch with two hundred people at once or the need to keep up with something going on that I can only do via that medium, I think I can probably do this.  Sure, it's going to be difficult, but I have other things that can occupy my time and I have pretty good willpower.  And hey, maybe my hubby and I will have actual conversations at night now instead of both of us sitting there, laptops on our laps, hitting refresh every 5 minutes.

THAT will be refreshing.

regression

Because I'm extremely frustrated, in need of an escape, have no money with which to do so, need a new job, wish the school year was over so I wouldn't have to force my kid to do homework without feeling the need to tie him to a chair to do so, yadda, yadda, yadda, I've found myself looking for items that I loved as a child.  Here are some that I've found that will hopefully bring a smile to your face as well.

Doesn't this just reek of being a kid - and not a bad reek, more like a bread was baking in the oven, but it's been sitting on the counter for a while kind of reek.

I played with this thing a ton!

And I was a Barbie freak.  I had this one - thought the astronaut by day/party girl by night outfit with shoulder-poufs the size of Alaska were something to aspire to.  "We girls can do anything!"

Zug-zug

White Nights - I've watched this movie hundreds of times and never tire of it.

I was also a Michael Jackson fanatic back in the days of Thriller, but looking back, I think my favorite album of his was Off The Wall.  It was him before he started going a little off-kilter.

Yup.  Had it.  Most of my "Ponies" were unicorns and pegasuses (or is it pegasi?)  Hard to stick a sunbonnet  on a unicorn.

And last but certainly not least.....

Our old pal, Grover.  Who didn't love Grover?  He was sweet, friendly, sometimes even Super.  He was the epitome of childhood innocence, 20x better than Elmo,
and thankfully we never realized how similar his voice was to Yoda's.

when is it swooning season again?

Not only is February cold and dark and all-over boring, but I have no men to watch!

Football season is over, so no Clay Matthews.

We're in-between blockbuster movie seasons, so no Chris Hemsworth. (Okay, I watched the remake of Red Dawn, but that was made pre-Thor and he just wasn't the same.)

Mad Men doesn't return until April, so no Jon Hamm (unless you count award season, but I don't).

True Blood isn't back until the summer, so no Joe Manganiello.  Well, Twitter gives me odd photos every now and again, but it ain't no mostly-nude were-sex scene.

I seem to be into the black and white thing today.  Aaaaanyhooters....

I'm dying over here!

My dear friend just suggested that I browse Pinterest and though I've resisted for so long, I had a moment of weakness and caved and... oh my lord.  No wonder so many women are using it.  Sure, they say it's for recipes and fun crafty ideas and nifty outfits, but I bet you anything most of them are just browsing pictures of men they have crushes on.  I'm still going to resist the urge to sign up and will only use it in moments of terrible weakness which will hopefully happen only once or twice before at least one of these guys comes back with any regularity.

I can handle it....really....I think.

what i'd rather be doing

I have a crapload of reports I should be working on, but I just can't focus on them.  I start one, glance at something online or go into some daydream, then it takes me 15 minutes to get back on task.  I guess that's what one would call easily distracted or completely unmotivated or a combination of them both.

SQUIRREL!!
I don't know what's caused it - maybe the full moon, maybe just boredom with my job.  How to combat it?  I suppose I could close out the internet, put a huge pile of papers in front of me to show me just how much I need to do as some strange form of motivation, but I've decided to compile a list of things I'd rather be doing instead.  These are things that would be possible, not the fantastical things like Vacation in Rome.  I mean, things like that are just given...
  • Reading in the sun while working on my summer color.  Actually I did a bit of this during lunch, but it's hard to get a good tan in work clothes.
  • Having lunch with some friends.  And laughing.
  • Preparing a pinhole camera to see Venus in Transit
  • Hiking.  Preferably with at least one other person for fear of abduction
  • Sex  (Duh)
  • Listening to a lecture about anything.  At this point, I think anything different would be better than these things.
  • Watching The Avengers again and gorging on buttery popcorn and a small soda.  That's how I roll.
  • Looking at pictures of men I have schoolgirl crushes on and escaping into a little fantasy world, but not while I'm at work
  • Going out and taking meaningless pictures of things I see every day, but at different angles
  • Singing along with the radio.  I'm feeling silly, so how about some 80's classics?
Okay, back to it.  For another 10 minutes.  Until I start thinking about something else again.

empty brain syndrome

I've had an intense feeling of the blahs this week.  Actually, I'm not sure if that's possible.  Can one be intensely blah?  Isn't blah the lack of any kind of intensity whatsoever?  Eh...moving on.

Anyway, my week last week was incredibly hectic.  Long, extremely busy hours at work, meetings, more work, and then I'd come home do a bunch of chores and running around and crash right as it was time for me to go to bed.

This week, on the other hand, is the exact opposite.  There isn't a single thing going on.  No tasks, no projects, no annoying phone calls...nothing.  I find myself going from website to website searching for something to pique my interest, but come up short.  I'd love to read this book that I've had in my bag for a couple of weeks, but that's a huge no-no.  If I could only find a way to get the book onto my computer screen (no I can't do the Kindle thing here).

Click, scroll, sigh, click, back, click, sigh, sip water, scroll, click, look at clock, sigh, back...

I've tried listening to podcasts that would teach me things, take me to new places, make me laugh, but it won't help the fact that I need to look busy.  And to top it all off, I can barely even hear what's being said over the constant noise coming from our HVAC system.  If I were to turn it up loud enough so that I could understand what's being said, the whole office would get to listen to the podcast too.  For some reason, I doubt they'd enjoy that.

So I sit here, listening to the same tired old music that I've been listening to for the past few years (with a few minor additions and subtractions) clicking around for a half-hour or so, getting up to stretch my legs that don't seem to like to sit for long periods of time anymore, walking to the cafeteria, finding nothing low-carb that I can snack on, and walking back where it all starts again.

Click, scroll, sigh, click, back, click, sigh, sip water, scroll, click, look at clock, sigh, back...

Then the time finally arrives where I can go home.  Hooray!  I zone out on my 15-minute drive and as I pull into my garage, I wonder how I got there.  I go in, say my hellos, get the updates from the male-folk, change, make dinner, eat, then I find that the empty brain death follows me home from work and I stare blankly at a TV or computer monitor for a couple of hours and go to bed.

Then it starts again the next day.

I'm hoping this doesn't last the rest of the week.  My functioning brain cells might revolt or run away or kill themselves.  I kind of like my brain...don't want that to happen.

Must. snap. out. of. it.

But how?

what a day for a daydream

It's cold, windy and rainy outside.  I'm sitting in my office not feeling like doing anything.  My mind races from point A to point B to point Q and around again.  No clear thoughts, just bits and pieces of daydreams and memories and song lyrics and photos and tasks that I need to try to remember.  It would be a great day to lounge around at home alone listening to music, singing along, dancing around the house and just being free to whatever whim possesses me at that moment.  But here I sit at a computer trying to look productive for another 4 1/2 hours, hoping that nobody gives me any actual work to do.  If my thoughts aren't even streamlined enough to write a good blog post today, writing a contract would certainly not be the wisest idea.

why the hell did you do that?

I was writing an entry that just wasn't working for me tonight, so I decided to do something not sentimental, not sappy, not at all meaningful.  Something easy and frivolous.  Here it goes:

The Worst Movies I've Seen My Favorite Actors In

Yeah, this is a good one.

Okay.  Favorite Actor...of course...

1) Johnny Depp.  Oh, he's been in so many movies - great, good, so-so and "huh?" but the one that I'd like to forget he was ever in has to be The Astronaut's Wife.

First off, Johnny Depp is an astronaut?  Um, no.  And then it's some bad sci-fi Rosemary's Baby wannabe movie.  It's a terrible waste of acting power, and by far the worst Johnny Depp movie I've seen.  (Bear in mind I haven't made myself sit through The Tourist.)

2) John Malkovich.  An odd man, but an amazing actor known for his roles in Dangerous Liaisons, Burn After Reading, and...well...Being John Malkovich.  He has a very diverse filmography and though I haven't  watched Jonah Hex (which I am sure would make this list if I had), he's even good in the bad movies.  There is one particular movie that sticks out in my mind and I wonder if he cringes when he thinks about it - Making Mr. Right.

Oh, this was bad.  When the trailer boasts that it's from the director of Desperately Seeking Susan, you know they're reaching.  He's a prat-falling android who falls in love...and a double role as the cold scientist who creates him?  Not the best way to break into the movies.  Maybe he figured he always had the Steppenwolf Theater to fall back on.

3) Bill Murray:  He's done some classics, but there have been a couple complete clunkers.  Though my knee-jerk instinct would be to go with his regret from Zombieland - Garfield, I've decided to go with something that he actually shows his face in.  Osmosis Jones.

While the concept of the movie was unique, it really wasn't very good.  And zooming in on Bill Murray's sweaty armpit isn't something I really need to see on a movie screen...or television screen...or nightmare...

4) Gary Oldman:  One of those actors who can be the bright spot in any movie, but this one was just too bad to save.  I present Lost in Space.

A silly evil doctor becomes a giant spider thingy.  No.  Can't give him any props on this one.  It's just....no.

I could add more actors to the list, but sometimes short and sweet is the way to go.  Do you have any additions to the list?

no wonder i'm not great at anything

No, I'm not looking for people to start saying, "But you're so good at ______," or, "Oh, yes you are."  What I'm talking about is not having one thing that I'm great at.  I can do a whole bunch of stuff okay, but I have no special talent and now I think I know why.

I decided to take one of those right-brain/left-brain quizzes today.  Why?  Eh, I don't know.  Well, actually it's probably because I'm inspired to look for a new job again and I'm trying to make sure I am going in the right direction.  Anyway...

I answered all of the questions on their website and came up with the following results:

Left Brain 44%
Right Brain 56%

I'm practically 50/50!  I always thought I was much more right-brained than that, but I think this damn numbers job has gone and screwed all that up.  My creativity and artistic talent that I used to have are now being overrun by logic.  I hate math, I hate over-organization, I don't want to be that left-brained.  I have to make it stop!  I'm now not-so-great at anything.  I can't draw the way I used to, or write as well as I want to, I'm still no math whiz (nor do I want to be) and I'm no public speaker.  I'm just kind of okay at it all.

And what's even more confusing is that the results contradict themselves.  One minute it says I'm good at seeing the whole picture and the next it's saying I'm not good at it and have to piece things together little by little.  I'm so confused!  Who am I?  What am I good at? Why can't the internet tell me what I need to know?! Is my brain that screwy or is the quiz completely worthless?  Woe!  Woe is me!

I guess if someone is looking for an employee who can do just about anything, but in mediocre fashion, look no further than me! -sigh-

Curious about your own brain?  Try taking the test here.

My complete results, if you're that curious about how my brain works, are after the jump:

15 movies that stick with you

This is one of those facebook things where one person writes a list of favorites in their notes, tags a bunch of people, and then those people are supposed to do the same thing in turn.  Well. my parents were the ones who tagged me.  This poses two problems as 1) I have my notes hidden from family members and 2) I really don't think they need to know my list of memorable movies because some of them are memorable for reasons my parents don't need to know.  I like thinking about these movies though, so I've decided to post these in my blog where I can feel a little more open about what I say.  I've never been one to follow the rules when it comes to some things.

Here goes:
THE RULES: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen films you've seen that will always stick with you. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. Tag fifteen friends, including me, because I'm interested in seeing what films my friends choose. (To do this, go to your Notes tab on your profile page, paste rules in a new note, cast your fifteen picks and tag people in the note)

1. Amadeus - Best movie ever.  There isn't a single thing I don't like about it.
2. Pee Wee's Big Adventure - I can recite this movie line for line.  Blame it on a sleep-over in 5th grade when we watched it over and over.
3. Bram Stoker's Dracula - We saw this after going to visit a prospective college.  I was still a little hopped-up on codeine from my tonsillectomy, so the visuals looked 10 times better and the acting probably didn't seem quite as bad at the time.  I will say one thing though - the whole vampire thing put us in the right mood to have a very memorable evening once we got home.
4. Basic Instinct - Me and the hubby's first date.  Way to start things off with a bang, huh?  In high school, I wanted to be just like the lead character - strong, smart, sly, and kinky.
5. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang - It's just so freaking funny and in such a dry, quick-witted manner.  I love getting people turned on to this one since it was never very well-known.
6. Labyrinth - Come on - a fairy tale by Jim Henson with awesome characters, the Bog of Eternal Stench, Ludo, and of course David Bowie in leather and tights.  "Love me, fear me, do as I say and I will be your slave."  Yup.
7. White Nights - One word...Baryshnikov
8. Pollyanna - I'm not saying this is one of my favorites, but it certainly is memorable.  I used to watch it every time it was on TV just to torture my poor father.
9. The Doors - My friends and I saw this in the theater 4 times.  This was quite a fete being that it was rated R and we were still underage.  Seeing it on the big screen was like a drug trip in itself...or so it would seem.  I have nothing to compare it to.
10. Ghostbusters - I saw this with my parents in the theater when it first came out and I remember the audience singing along with the theme song.  So great, it still holds up after all these years.  My friends and I still use the gatekeeper/keymaster analogy.
11. Poltergeist 2 - I had a hard time deciding between the first and second Poltergeist movies, but I have to go with the second because of Reverend Kane and "God is in his holy temple," the tequila worm monster and Taylor and the car.  Classic.
12. Anchorman - The first time I watched this movie, I thought it was the most stupid thing on the face of the earth, but once I watched again, I found myself laughing heartily.  It's now one of my favorites.
13. Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi - I know, they're three separate movies, but they're a trilogy and therefore one continued storyline.  Come on, these shaped a whole generation of us.  What girl didn't want to be Princess Leia and what guy didn't think Han Solo was cool or geek out when Leia was in her slave costume?  Iconic is the best word I can think of for them.
14. Dangerous Liasons - A wonderful interweaving of damaged characters.  Brilliantly played, beautiful scenery and costumes, tons of mind games.  Perfect.
15. Ed Wood - Wonderful movie about a director who, at the time, I didn't think many people knew about.  Martin Landau does a spot-on Bela Lugosi, Bill Murray as a character named "Bunny," Sarah Jessica Parker in a role I could actually tolerate, and Johnny Depp doing a strip-tease in angora.  Need I say more?

the men i ♥

Ah, men.  I love men.  True love, family, friends, people who make me laugh, think, make my heart go aflutter.

Here's to the men I heart in many different ways...the ones I know, and the ones I admire from afar...

My loving husband: Man o' my dreams, my knight in shining armor.  Hubby for 14 years.  Always ready to make me smile or laugh.  Encourages me to explore and grow and loves me for who I am.  Great father, thankfully great at math (since I'm not), takes care of me, the kid, the household.  He's a protector and a man of many talents.  Gotta love him.

My awesome son:  Well, of course

My dad:  A completely unique individual.  Quiet thinker, musician, poet, writer, photographer.  Taught me to be a free-thinker and for that I'll always be grateful.

My best friend:  I don't see or talk to this guy nearly enough, but when I do see him it's like we only saw each other yesterday.  Friends since 7th grade, he's one of the few people I can completely be myself around - he's seen me at my best and my worst and that's okay by me.

My pop-in-law and bro-in-law:  The men-folk in my husband's family.  Accepted me quickly into the family and for that I'll always be thankful.

My sangha friends: Smart, entertaining, thoughtful, compassionate and strong. It's great having these guys around.
My work "spouse":  I think that's what he's considered these days anyway.  The one person at my lousy job who I can laugh and roll my eyes with, talk to about silly 80's toys and shows and steal food from.  He keeps me somewhat sane there.

The mattress guy:  The poor guy who stands on the corner of the street by the strip mall, dressed in a mattress, constantly waving at the people driving past.  How many people suddenly think to themselves, "Hey, I think I'll buy a new mattress today!" upon seeing him.  I'm guessing maybe 1 every three months.  Yet, he still stands out there every weekend.

Johnny Depp:  I still don't know why.  He's so not my type, but YUM!  I used to hate him until I realized how many movies I loved that he starred in.  Maybe I still thought of him back in his 21 Jump Street days - baby faced, trying to be a rebel just to rebel.  I'm liking the good yet bad-boy, dirty pirate, great with kids combo.

Bill Murray:  Come on - this guy's been making us laugh since the beginning of time, he can do a great serious role and get right back to making us laugh again.  He's so out of the Hollywood game and yet he's worshipped.  Gotta heart him for that.

Jon Hamm:  This is a recent addition to the heart list.  Yes, he's suave yet naughty on Mad Men, but he's also freaking funny!  Seen him on SNL or 30 Rock?  He's great!  In interviews, he's honest and just like any regular guy.  I could hang out with him for a day and be totally happy.

That's a whole lotta love, and I haven't even skimmed the surface.  Men are awesome.  Need I say more?

if i were a playboy centerfold

I'm sure it would be a very low-selling issue.  No, I have no desire to have a bunch of nudie pics taken of me, nor have I ever.  I wanted to be a Bunny when I was little, but that's really beside the point.  I was actually thinking about the silly questions that those girls have to answer, so I've compiled some of the common questions (as found on the internet) and my answers just for fun...

What’s the worst place for a guy to hit on you?  Probably while I'm out walking/jogging.  I'm incredibly sweaty and have a hard time talking because I'm breathing so hard.  Not really feeling attractive at that point.  Of course, maybe that would prevent anyone from hitting on me...

What’s the worst pick-up line you’ve ever heard?  "That's the finest specimen of ass in the universe."  Of course, it was in high school...and I ended up marrying the guy.

What’s the best or most creative pick-up line you’ve ever heard? I don't think I've ever heard a good one.  Most of them are so tired...or I've never had anyone creative hit on me.

What approach is most likely to work with you? Total honesty.  Blow me away by telling me what you're really thinking, or ask me a question that's something other than small talk.
What signals do you give to a man when you want him to make the first move?  I'm a very physical touchy-feely person with guys I'm comfortable with, so much of what I do could be considered a "first move" even if it's not.  I don't know that the guy would have the chance to move first.

What are your biggest turn-ons?  Honesty, humor, compassion, broad shoulders, strong hands and forearms, long walks in the moonlight...blah, blah, blah...hee hee.

What are your biggest turn-offs?  Big egos, ignorance, small-mindedness, copious amounts of body hair, farting in public.

What are your favorite activities?  Singing, reading, meditating, daydreaming, laughing, taking long walks outside.

What are your guilty pleasures?  Singing in the car, eating fried foods or cookie dough ice cream with chocolate Magic Shell covering it, watching RuPaul's shows on Logo, playing dress up every once in a while.
