I just took a look at a list of release dates from 1985 and realized just how many movies from that year have stuck with me. What an awesome year for entertainment! Here is a list of some of my favorites from that great year 25 years ago. Oh heck - I'll throw in some of my not-so-favorite ones too just to see if you remember them...
The Breakfast Club
Vision Quest
Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend
The Care Bears Movie
Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Ladyhawke
Just One of the Guys
Private Resort
Gotcha
Brewster's Millions
Rambo: First Blood Part Two
Fletch
The Goonies
D.A.R.Y.L.
Cocoon
Return To Oz
Red Sonja
St Elmo's Fire
Back to the Future
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Explorers
The Legend of Billie Jean
The Man With One Red Shoe
The Black Cauldron
Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Weird Science
Real Genius
The Bride
Better Off Dead
Teen Wolf
Agnes of God
The Journey of Natty Gann
Always
Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins
Once Bitten
White Nights
Spies Like Us
A Chorus Line
Jewel of the Nile
Clue
The Color Purple
Enemy Mine
All of these movies in just one span of twelve months. These are classics! I could go on quoting almost every one of these, but I would take up way too much cyberspace. Maybe I'll have to start a weekly posting celebrating a great 1985 movie each week...?

snot
Just where does this crap come from? I just don't understand the workings of the common cold.
Day 1 - feeling fine except for a little scratchy throat.
Day 2 - Nose so stuffy it feels like someone has built a brick wall inside my nostrils preventing any air from travelling in or out while, at the same time, a different kind of snot slowly trickles out and around the base of my nose. The brick wall makes it impossible for me to sniffle it back in and forces me to keep a kleenex firmly planted to or sometimes shoved inside my nostril. It's a lovely look.
Day 3 - There is improvement. I can now breathe out of one nostril at a time and when my nose does decide to run, I can usually sniffle it back in. Of course - when I stand up I feel much better. As soon as I sit, I start to stuff up again. Apparently snot is greatly affected by altitude.
Day 4 - After a night of misery yet again, I have been greeted by occasional brick walls, a small intermittent stream of snot and occasional nose boulders. Eh - baby steps. At least I don't feel like I'm dying...

fat tuesday
Laissez les bons temps rouler people!
I swear I'm working in some sort of happiness-sucking zone here.
Everyone's bitchy, crabby, grumpy, and all-around foul. I would much rather be down in the midst of the revelers in New Orleans. Nope, never been there, but I'm sure they're a much happier group of people than the group I'm stuck with. Silence, frowns, and whispering behind doors is the way our office is celebrating Fat Tuesday. Granted, I certainly don't want to see these people flashing anything, but will a smile or a laugh really kill you? I doubt it would even hurt.

Anyway, Fat Tuesday seems to be living up to its name in my world. Not becaue of what I'm eating this particular day, but because of the poundage I've packed on over the past few months. I certainly wouldn't be flashing anyone this year myself! Swimsuit shopping last weekend was one of the most depressing things I've done in a looong time. So, after my family's little getaway next month, where I'm sure to be eating a bunch of junk, I'm cracking down and taking drastic measures to get rid of this excess blubber. (You see, if I write this for the whole world to see, I really have to do it.) So there it is!
This week I will be indulging in my mother's New Orleans cuisine - meat pies, jambalaya, crab bisque. (Funny, she's lived in WI her whole life) At the beginning of next week I will be drinking margaritas by the pool and sharing pizza and ice cream with my son. Looks like Fat Tuesday is going to last a little bit longer than a day.
Anyway, live it up today. Don't let the extra weight around your midsection or those nasty evil peeps at the office get you down. Let the good times roll mofo's!

it's monday and i'm in a good mood...danger!
I woke up when my alarm went off at 5:50 this morning and actually got my ass out of bed. On a Monday, this is unheard of. I usually stay in bed for another half an hour to get the most out of my comfy-bed-experience. Today, I decided to be a good girl, got up, got going, was in a good mood and didn't even mind ironing my clothes in a hurry. I'm wondering if my husband slipped me some sort of happy pill in my sleep last night.
Trying to figure out what might be the cause of this apparent bliss is quite difficult. Actually, there are things that are making me happy, but I wouldn't think that any single one of them would be able to override the dismal pit of life that is a Monday morning. Could it be the combination of things - the birth of a best friend's son, the thought of an upcoming vacation, the Saint's victory at the Super Bowl? Perhaps...
The happy perky me made it all the way through getting my son ready for school and getting myself ready for work and as soon as I walked in the door, I could feel it quickly being sucked out of me. "No, no...this will not happen!" I said to myself. So, I proceeded to walk into my office and shut the door behind me in hopes of blocking out the good-vibe-sucking-nastiness coming from everywhere around me. A success for the most part. All I have to say to all the grumpy people today is, "Snap the hell out of it, or I'm gonna slap you upside the head!"

groundhog day
Well, it's the silliest holiday to be printed on the calendar - Groundhog Day. How did all this crap get started? Well according to Wikipedia, it's been around for a while:
"An early American reference to Groundhog Day can be found in a diary entry, dated February 5, 1841, of Berks County, Pennsylvania storekeeper James Morris:
'Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate.'"
Yeah, okay, don't get it. I guess people just got bored in the dead of winter and found something to latch onto in order to have a party to go to. After looking at this year's predictions, our two local groundhogs are calling for an early spring. I could go for that this year. Of course, sometimes it feels more like Bill Murray's prediction...
