The ramblings of a somewhat bawdy, opinionated, pop-culture-loving thirty-some-year-old woman who feels like sharing her random thoughts with the world.
What I Want To Do For My Summer Vacation by Rebecca
What I want to do for my summer vacation is rent a yacht and cruise the Mediterranean for a week. I would like to rent a yacht called the "Vajoliroja" which the owner, Johnny Depp, named after his family (and sounds a lot like "The Jolly Roger").
I think it's a very beautiful ship - full of my favorite colors, deep reds and blacks and it has lots and lots of pretty wood on it. I would like to try to ride the waverunners and do a little kayaking on the sea. I could even watch tv and play on the Wii! The yacht only costs about $110,000.00 to rent for a week and I think that's a very small price to have so much fun on a big boat. If the owner wanted to use it to go to his private island in the Bahamas instead, I'd be happy to share the ride with him. I can be really nice like that.
So while my friends are going camping and swimming at the pool, that is what I would like to do during the summer.
Other than the horrendous work situation I'm in, things are going swimmingly. Spring is here - I was able to sit out in the sun for a half-hour this afternoon while I ate my lunch. I have the bestest hubby in the whole wide world - sure sometimes I wanna smack him upside the head, but other times he gives me more than I could ever expect. My son is well-behaved, intelligent and maturing every day - of course, with that there's more and more testing but that's to be expected. I'm succeeding in my quest to lose weight - slowly but surely those pounds are starting to melt away. I have awesome friends - some near that I talk to often and others far away, but still there. All of them rock!
Life is good! My work life just drags me down so much that I forget about all the good stuff around me. Gotta stop letting that happen and focus on allll that positive things in my life. No more tears, dang it!
Guess I don't really have a point to this post, but as the song below says: "If you don't have a point to make Don't sweat it You'll make a sharp one being so kind And I'd sure appreciate it. Everyone else's goal's to get big headed Why should I follow that beat being that I'm Better than fine"
I woke up this morning with this song playing in my head and I have no idea why:
It makes me wanna put on a spandex dress and do the running man. (Then I remember that my body isn't shaped the way it was in high school and a spandex dress would be a very scary thing at this point.) We wore and listened to a bunch of crap back then! I guess any generation can look back and laugh, but come on - we were crazy! Here are a few more choice tidbits of late 80's/early 90's nostalgia to cringe at:
Ever notice how the guy who's "rapping" sounds like the same one from Revenge of the Nerds? Just sayin'...
Oh, I don't really miss that stuff. Of course the heavy hitters of MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were big things back then, but I can't post their videos because they're un-embeddable (my new word for the day).
Time to shake all this big hair off and move on...
So, I turn on my computer this morning and the headlines read something like this: "Hundreds dead in China quake"
"India cyclone kills 31"
"Iceland evacuates hundreds as volcano erupts again"
All in a row - just like that.
Are we experiencing the beginning of the end? Is the earth finally telling its inhabitants that it's fed up and we need to find someplace new? Are those damned ancient Mayans right?
I highly doubt that the number of earthquakes and storms have increased that much. I have a feeling we're just hearing about them more often than we used to. We're in an age of sensationalistic "journalism" on a 24-hour basis that needs to fill up its time with something. (Maybe that's why Glenn Beck has his own show.) What better way to fill it up than with things that happen every day but sound absolutely horrible, so our attention is drawn to it like a train wreck.
Imagine what a field day the news networks would have had if they had been around in the days of the eruption of Krakatoa - now THAT was a bit of hell on earth. Or picture the nation-wide manhunt for John Wilkes Booth after Lincoln's assasination. (I picture it being something like watching OJ in the white Bronco.) Minute by minute updates and interviews with the neighbor of the cousin of a member of the audience in the theater that night who had an obstructed view of Booth jumping onto the stage and maybe out a door somewhere...
But, I digress...I don't see natural everyday disasters as the prediction of our demise. Now, if the Holy See started giving all of its money away to third world nations to promote the use of condoms, I might just take that as a sure sign.
Who knew that Amazing Larry actually had a bit of a backstory to his amazing hair? I hate to admit it, but I'm glad this didn't make it into the final cut.
These are the movies that are quoted left and right and are the subject of pop culture references by the thousands...and all from 1985! Tell me you wouldn't watch these on a lazy weekend afternoon.
1. Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Ah, my favorite movie on the list and my second-favorite movie of all time. This is the movie that I can recite every line of when I watch it, much to the chagrin of my husband. I have turned my son into a Pee Wee fan and I'm darn proud of it! By the way - did you know this was Tim Burton's first movie?
What's Awesome: Everything! Okay, okay...Large Marge, Amazing Larry, the Alamo tour, "I know you are, but what am I?" rescuing animals from the pet store fire Not So Awesome: The sequel - Big Top Pee Wee. Not awesome at all.
2. Back to the Future
Because of a flux capacitor in a DeLorean and a van full of angry Lybians, Marty McFly ends up in 1955 and has to help his parents fall in love so his life can continue while working with the younger version of the man who invented said time machine to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of energy needed to send him home. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it? Classic.
What's Awesome: Time travel, Huey Lewis soundtrack, a young Billy Zane, the DeLorean, Doc Brown Not So Awesome: Way too much Pepsi product placement, the orange vest - I never liked that thing
3. The Breakfast Club
I didn't see this movie until I was an adult. I know, shocked. Having never been in detention (insert halo here) I couldn't really relate, but I liked the story of people in different groups getting to know one another for who they really are and not their label. Totally my kind of message. Throw in Ally Sheedey's awesome character and a fun dance sequence (because we all wanted to do that in our school libraries) and you've got a pretty cool movie.
What's Awesome: Pixie Stick sandwich, the lipstick trick, dandruff art Not So Awesome: Molly Ringwald - I was never a fan
4. The Goonies
I was never as big a fan of this movie as other people, but it was an interesting concept. I wanna go searching for pirate treasure! The bad guys were annoying, the good guys were annoying...in fact, I don't know if I liked a single character...but that's just me. Still loved by millions and still a classic.
What's Awesome: The Cyndi Lauper theme song, searching for pirate treasure Not So Awesome: The token fat kid, the Fratellis, Corey Feldman, Sloth...I could go on
5. Clue
Oh, how I love this movie! I had seen it when it first came out on video, but didn't really appreciate the comedic performances and timing until I was much older. Who knew a movie based on a board game could be so perfect. The cast was amazing and the three different endings made things even more fun. "But here's what really happened..."
What's Awesome: The singing telegram, Mrs. White's "flames on the sides of my face," Tim Curry, "Too Late" Not So Awesome: With the death of Madeline Kahn, there will never be another comedy ensemble quite like it.
That does it for my look back at the movies of 1985. From now on, I'll just be rambling on about nothing in particular. :)
