come, heavy sleep (just not right now, i have things to do)

The innocent sleep,
Sleep that knits up the ravelled sleeve of care, t
The death of each day's life, sore labor's bath,
Balm of hurt minds, great Nature's second course,
Chief nourisher in life's feast
 - William Shakespeare

I am a moron.   There are many reasons why I can say this, but today's reason would be that I set myself up to be extremely tired today.  I knew it going into it and I still chose to do it to myself.  I went to a lecture in a city an hour away from me last night.  The lecture started at 8:00pm.  It finished at 11:00pm.  I was in bed at midnight.  My alarm went off at 5:20am so that I could get up and exercise because I refuse to miss a day of this crazy workout for fear that I'd never start again.  I got up, worked out, and proceeded to get ready for my 8 1/2 hour workday.    Now here I sit at my keyboard - a jittery, giddy, fuzzy-thinking moron - becoming more and more tired at the virtual ticking of every second. and laughing at the silly things I find myself doing.
  • Typing things like "bye bye" and "okie dokie" in business emails.  Thankfully remembering to delete them.
  • Doing the "mom sway" in my office chair.  (Parents, you know what I'm talking about)  Just give me a lullaby to hum to myself and I'll be out like a light.
  • Giving my computer monitor a double bird-flip after getting a ridiculous request via email from someone I always get ridiculous requests from.
  • Sinking lower and lower in my chair until I notice that my ass has slid almost completely off of the front of it.
  • Loudly humming along to the music I have playing in my office.  Loud enough that other people can hear me.
  • Laughing out loud at myself for loudly humming along to the music I have playing in my office.
  • Staring blankly at the digital photo frame on my desk as pictures I've seen thousands of times cycle through, snapping out of it, shaking my head, and then staring blankly at my computer monitor.
  • Looking at the clock and swearing at myself after realizing how many more hours of office-chair-sitting I have left.
Ah, sleep deprivation is fun!  No....no it's not.  I'm lying.  But I did it to myself, so I have to try to make the most of it.  I have to say - I"m looking forward to floating into my bed tonight.  Preferably around 8pm.

a buffet of posts

I've hit another wall when it comes to posting.  I have three drafts that consist of titles and a couple of ideas just waiting for me to go back to them and make them sound awesome.  It's not happening.  I'll write a sentence or two and clear them out again, never getting anywhere.  Instead of completely abandoning them, I've decided to place them all in one post so you can have a taste of each of them.  Consider this the Golden Corral of my blog...minus the chocolate fountain.

on a steeeeck
Oh, the array of artery-clogging foods being offered at the state fair.  Everything from deep fried bacon-wrapped cheese-filled tater tots to deep fried stuffing on a stick (how do they get it to stay together?) to something called a Pork Doughnut (a sugared Bismark stuffed with BBQ pork).  And don't forget the dessert choices of chocolate covered cheese, or a Fat Elvis on a stick (peanut butter cup covered in banana batter with bacon) and wash it all down with a beer float. (Can you tell it's Wisconsin?)

How do people survive a trip there?  Do they have first aid stations set up specifically for coronary issues?  Extra bathrooms for the hundreds of people who will surely have digestive issues after ingesting so much grease?  Having never been there, I can't answer these questions.  Maybe I'll have to go next year so I can see for myself...and maybe try the bacon-wrapped deep-fried hot dog on a stick...

birdwatching = life-watching
On one lovely weekend morning, I decided to meditate on my balcony for a change. As I finished I looked across the street and saw not only a blue heron but also a pair of sandhill cranes. Not long after that, there was a kingfisher on the top of the house across the street that was singing while it beat its next meal (the small fish hanging out of its mouth) against the peak of the roof.  Not a pretty sight, but still fascinating.  I watched them all for about half an hour as people worked in their garages, drove past them, going about their business not even knowing they were there. It just reminded me to slow down and take the time to look around you - you never know what amazing things you might be missing.

a good morning ass-kicking
After turning on the television and being subjected to infomercials morning after morning, and foolishly thinking "Hey, I could do that" I made the decision to start the Insanity workout.  Thankfully I had someone I could borrow it from so I didn't have to pay the $120 for something that in the back of my head I was pretty sure I would fail miserably at.  I made the decision to start on a Monday, decided the only way I could fit it in to my schedule would be to get up early which I've never had much success with.  This was really sounding like I was going to crash and burn.

The first morning's workout was what they call the Fit Test where you have a certain amount of time in which to do as many repetitions of an exercise as possible.  Then the next time you do the test, you should see some improvements.

I almost died.

When I was finally finished and took a shower, I could barely lift my arms up over my head to wash my hair.  Walking around work was almost impossible.  Things certainly didn't improve on the second day when I had to do the actual workout.  For gods' sake - the perfectly-toned athletes in the video had to keep taking breaks.  What the hell was I doing trying this?

Not one to give up too easily, I pushed through and by the second week was actually starting to enjoy getting up, putting on smelly workout clothes, and getting so sweaty doing this over-the-top workout that my face was dripping every morning.  Now if I don't have a muscle that hurts or is a little strained, I feel like I must not have worked hard enough and try harder the next time.

I don't think it's called Insanity because the workout is so insane...I think it's because the people who continue with it are insane themselves.  I actually enjoy kicking my own ass every morning!

dessert
I was going to provide a little eye candy for this buffet's dessert, but I can't seem to find any new pictures that trip my trigger.  Maybe someone out there can send me something new?  Maybe?

Please leave your plates on the table and a busser will be by to pick them up.  Have a good day.

pretty comet debris

Sometime around August 10th every year, we're treated to a show of thousand-year-old debris burning up in our atmosphere.  Yes, those lovely Perseids.  We pass through the cloud of smallish rocks from the Swift-Tuttle comet the same time each year and sometimes the skies are clear enough to actually see some falling stars.

I had actually forgotten about the meteor shower until I happened to be looking at an extremely clear sky the night before with my Google Sky Map app (it's fun from time to time) and right there just down from Cassiopeia and over from Perseus was a little starburst that said "Perseids"

Um....not quite.
Saturday night, once the kid was asleep, I had our dogs out for their nightly constitutional and zoom went one meteor.   Considering I was right next to a street light and could still see the thing, I had a good feeling about the success of the night's stargazing.

As soon as I got back home, I turned off all of our lights and pulled one of our highly uncomfortable dining room chairs onto our balcony which had a perfect view of Cassiopeia. (Of all of the constellations in the sky there are only four that I can recognize...The Big and Little Dippers, Orion, and Cassiopeia.)  I slumped down in the chair as far as I could so that I could rest my head on the back of the hard wooden chair and put my feet up on the railing of the balcony.  This was not comfortable, but it was either this awkward position or lay down on the floor of the balcony easily looking straight up into the sky while running the risk of numerous huge spiders crawling all over me.  No thank you.  I'll take the kinked-up neck.

There were oh so many stars that were visible despite the streetlights and the glow coming from town.  And there were even more stars that were very faint that I knew I could see if I was just a little further out of town.  I strained my eyes to see them even though I knew that the best way to make them visible was to relax my vision and look at the sky the way that we'd have to look at those posters they used to sell in malls with the hidden 3D pictures in them.

It's not a sailboat.
Zoom, zoom!  Two meteors in a row.  Never mind the stars.  This was already better than other years I'd tried staying up to see she sky show.  And it was only 11pm!   This is awesome!

A few more meteors flew past and my the base of my skull was starting to hurt from the chair it was resting on.  I toyed again with the idea of stretching out on the balcony floor, but I knew I was starting to get pretty tired and there was a good chance of me dozing off and do you know how many spiders you swallow in one night in your own bed?  Can you imagine the number of them on the balcony?  I decided to get a small pillow to use between my head and the chair instead.

I was up to 8 meteors and it was a little past midnight.  I was beginning to doze off in the accordion-like position that I was folded into, but I resolved to make it to 10 meteors.  I had never seen so many before in one night and I wanted to make it a nice even number.

And nothing happened.  And the awesomeness was beginning to fade.

A few whispy clouds skimmed the edge of my viewing area and I just knew that they must be obscuring the other meteors that I should be seeing so I could get to bed.  Damned clouds.  Ow!  Damned neck.  Damned spiders living outside that aren't letting me comfortable...

One more meteor flew over.

It's about damned time!  Come on you pieces of rock, I just need one more and then I can get into bed.

And nothing

After ten minutes, I decided to give up.  Terribly disappointed in the Perseids, I dragged myself off of the chair and into the apartment, leaving the chair out there because I didn't want to bother with it.  Screw the damned chair and the meteors.  I'm going to bed.

Of course, I'm sure a tenth meteor flew overhead as soon as I stepped foot inside.  I just know it.

After a good night's sleep (even with a bruise at the base of my skull), I can once again appreciate the wonder that is falling debris amongst the vastness of space.  Someday I only wish I can see it from a much more comfortable position with even more stars to gaze at.

Bucket list view.

ode to the fish nugget

Explanation: The people who select our food for the employee cafeteria at work for some reason believe that we are all devout Catholics and will not eat meat on Fridays.  We are only given some form of seafood as our protein for the day.  Because they don't want to spend much money on the food that we're served, we're given processed fish nuggets (a step up from the fish sticks we had been getting, I suppose).  Today, one of my co-workers dubbed these nuggets "Spongebob Squarefish" and I found myself compelled to write lyrics for the theme song that the nuggets so desperately needed...

Who’s seafood-y, but never came from the sea?

Spongebob Squarefish!

All crunchy yet soggy and tasteless is he.

Spongebob Squarefish!

If a process-ed nugget is something you wish…

Spongebob Squarefish!

Then head to the Galley on Fridays for "fish"!

Spongebob Squarefish!

Spongebob Squarefish!
Spongebob Squarefish!
Spongebob Squarefish!

Spongebob Square-fiiiiiiiiish!

"wonder"ful self-image

I went to an event the other night with my husband, bought some new clothes, total girly shoes, I thought I looked amazing.  My husband thought I looked amazing.  I was totally Wonder Woman.

And then I saw pictures from the night and I felt much more like this:

I'm not sure which one I truly resembled more to those around me.  I know it was somewhere in-between the two, but it just goes to show that self-image sure is a bitch.

Side-note...Googling images of "fat Wonder Woman" comes up with many more selections than I could have imagined.  There are some sick puppies out there.

o.o.o.

Can't focus
foggy brain
Numbers staring at me
I stare back
blankly
then pick at my split ends
Sitting,
sitting
sitting
Ass falling asleep
Get up to do something
anything
forget what I was doing
Sit
Stare at monitor
turn on music
start doing work
Print a report
it sits on my desk
Stare at calculator
Switch to email
can't write a sentence
No reason for this
slept like a baby
straight through
great dreams
Want more
Have to be productive
Sip water
stare at report
punch in a few numbers
pick at fingernails
Sigh

music swell....and scene

I was presented with this sunset tonight.

As I went out and found the perfect place to take a picture, I found a hill to perch on.  I stepped up onto the dry, dusty hill and started thinking about all of the other people looking at the same sunset and all of the different places they're looking from.  I thought about all of the places I could be other than at the edge of this small town in WI, where my friends and family are, where life has taken me, the great, the not so great, and the things I haven't been able to experience yet.

And then all of the sudden I could hear the music swelling behind me, feel the sun reflecting off of my skin, envision a second sun setting in front of me, and I realized...

...I've watched Star Wars far too many times.

grown-up life

I know you haven't been hearing from me lately, but I've been busy in my free time doing things like researching jobs and education and resume updating and budgeting and trying to get people focused on tasks and doing reports and housework and having discussions about the plight of America's health care system and planning menus and dealing with bitchy people and grocery shopping and...and....

I think it's about time for me to go on a right-brained field trip.  Whether that means going somewhere that will help rev up my right brain or staying home and only writing fun things, singing and drawing, I'm not sure.  I'll have to look at my finances and check my calendar and see what I can come up with.

Dang it!  There I go again.

trying to fill in the blanks in my mad lib memory

I usually pride myself on my long-term memory.  (Let's not discuss my short-term memory where someone can tell me a time or a number four times and I'll forget it by the time I get to the other side of the room, okay?)  I remember sitting in my car seat, dropping my bear-shaped bottle full of orange juice on the floor of the car, getting frustrated and crying.  I remember falling into the tub of the apartment we moved out of when I was 3, hitting my head on the side, crying even though it didn't really hurt, and feeling all better when my mom gave me a few M&M's.  My memory is awesome!  Or so I thought.

I don't remember what it was (short-term again...ahem), but something made me remember an interesting couple of days in college.  It started out as a protest that the students in my housing complex decided to hold against the director who didn't listen to the needs/complaints of the students living there while living in her posh digs up on the top floor of the building.  I really have no idea why things were so unfair.  I mean, we were living in two-bedroom loft apartments with full kitchens, private bathrooms, an excercise room, a game room, music practice rooms and friendly security guards.  Sure, the hallways could have used a fresh coat of paint and things weren't perfect, but this was the first year our school provided any housing; there were kinks to be worked out.  Other than the psycho roommate I had for a while and the neighbors who would play Madonna at all hours that I could hear even while wearing earplugs and then get mad at me when I'd knock on their door to ask them to turn it down, my time there was pretty pleasant.  Of course I say this now.  Back when I was 19, I heard about people being treated unfairly and by gosh I was going to do something about it!

The protest was in the form of a sit-in in the commons area.  (This is where we would always convene after the numerous pulled fire alarms at all hours and would get lectured by the Chicago Fire Department.)  I changed the message on our answering machine (yes this was pre-cell phones) letting people know we weren't there because we were busy sitting-in and would get back to them once our point had been made, and after the fire alarm was pulled to signal the beginning (great idea, people) my roommates and I proceeded down to sit...in.

The police were outside because of the fire alarm, a news cameraman was there because one of the "organizers" invited him, but things were completely unorganized, nobody really knew what was being protested, but they sure were mad, and then somehow all hell broke loose when the cameraman was asked to leave and then ended up getting arrested and I think a couple of the students were arrested as well.  Pretty exciting for a girl from a town of 7,000 people.

I don't remember anything else from that night.  I guess we just went back to our rooms?

This is blank memory spot number one.  Feel free to fill in the blanks with your own colorful ideas.  After that we __________ (verb) to our __________ (noun).

The next day, one of my roommates (I had anywhere from 2-3 roomies over the course of 2 semesters) and I were walking through the lobby of our building and she did a double-take toward the security desk.  "Oh my god, I just creamed my pants.  That's __________ from Channel ___ News!  He's a fuckin' god!"

And this is where the most frustrating part of this spotty memory lies.  For the life of me, I cannot remember the name of the reporter who was there or the channel he was with.  I suppose it's not terribly important, but I'm now obsessed with trying to find this out.

I had no clue who this person was.  We didn't have a tv in our room, so I never watched the news, and being from Wisconsin, I wasn't familiar with the Chicago news-folk.  I had to agree with her astute observation of his good looks though.  God?  Maybe not, but he was pretty easy on the eyes.

We decided to non-chalantly go over to the security desk to see what was up and if we could be of any assistance.  He and his cameraman were trying to take a look around, but they wouldn't allow him in for security reasons unless he was a guest of a resident and signed in as any other guest would.  We were more than happy to make him our guest.  The cameraman had to stay behind though.  We didn't care, he wasn't that cute anyway.  The kind security guard was a little leery, but had no valid reason to say no, so he was ours!  Okay, our guest.

____________ (Ugh!) signed in, gave his ID, and we were off.  We showed him where the director lived, the smell of fresh paint wafting through the air.  We took him to the common areas including the game room and exercise room, and then we took him up to our floor and then our room.  (Yeah baby!)  The walls oh the hallways were in dire need of a new paint job, the carpeting already needed to be replaced, and the smell of pot (it was an art school) mingled with the nose-stinging aroma of burned popcorn, but it all passed as soon as we got in our room.  Clean, spacious, 4 empty beds...

And then I go blank again, so now it's time to play.  We took ___________ (name) to our ___________ (place) and __________ (verb) until we couldn't ____________ (verb) anymore.

When we were done, he asked if he could interview one of us, and me being an introvert but not wanting to miss a rare opportunity, agreed.  He had me stand on the front stairs of the building and asked me questions about the conditions, the reports of racism (which I really hadn't heard much about though it was apparently the underlying reason for the protest that I hadn't heard about), and damn he had beautiful blue eyes.

Spotty memory again.  He asked me "How do you feel about __________ (noun) in your _________(noun)?"  To which I replied, "I'm a small-town girl.  I don't really _________(verb) that way."   I do remember wanting to kick myself after the small-town girl comment though because I just happened to be dressed in overalls, a white tank top, white Chucks and had my hair in pigtails.  Way to go city, girl!  Also, the fact that I can remember exactly what I was wearing, but not what the guy's name was astonishes me.

My response, what ever it might have been, made him chuckle and then he threw this one at me.  "Well, Danny Bonaduce lives just down the road from you.  What do you think about that."  I laughed at that one and replied...um, yeah...I have no idea what I said.  Let's just make this one up completely.  "I think he should __________ (verb) __________ (plural noun) in a _________(adjective) _________(place)."

That was the end.  I watched the news in the tv in our commons area at 5,6 and 10, but there was no story about our little student scuffle at all.  I guess our little unorganized hubbub really had no bearing on the outside world - especially in a city as big as Chicago.   Of course, maybe the fact that it was John Wayne Gacy's execution day had something to do with it.

A year or two later, I remember being at a movie and  Mr. News God played a news anchor...or an entertainment news show anchor.  I don't really remember,  And I certainly don't remember which movie it was.   I do remember turning to my fiance and saying a little louder than I should have, "Oh my god!  That man was in my bedroom!"  It was met with extremely puzzled looks from the people around me and I had some explaining to do after the movie was over.

I've scoured the internet looking for both a list of Chicago reporters from 1994 and "news anchor" characters on IMDB, but haven't found what I'm looking for.  (I did find one Chicago reporter who was in a movie in the 90's, but that was Lester Holt who is now on the Today Show.  Though my reporter's skin color was very similar...this was not Lester Holt.)

The internet has failed me.  My memory has failed me.  Hopefully you can help me out.  If you know your Chicago newscasters and have a clue as to who this might have been or if you came up with some great Mad Lib memories, leave them in the comments.

rain tease

As I was taking the dogs out this morning, the rain tease came back. What is a rain tease, you ask? Let me illustrate.

Rain: Drip. Drip...  Drip.

Extremely Dry Grass: Ooh! Well, hello there.

Rain: Drip, drip, drip. Sprinkle.

Grass: Aww yeah! Ooh, that feels good.

Rain: Sprinkle. Light raaaaiiin!

Grass: Now that's what I'm talking about!

Rain: Light rain. Sprinkle, sprinkle, sprin...drip. Drip.

Grass: Hey! What's goin' on here?

Rain: Drip. Drip...Drip...

Grass: Come on, baby. Don't do this to me. You know I love you. Just a little bit more? I was just about to turn green!

Rain: Drip...

Extremely Dry and Frustrated Grass: Damn rain tease...
